Abstract
This research examines the role of Commercial Banks in the performance of Small Scale Enterprises in Nigeria. Small Scale Enterprises are the type of enterprises which cannot be neglected in Nigeria due to vital roles played in the economy. They are either directly or indirectly important to the Nigeria economy. These firms according to SMEs help in increasing the economic growth index (as in national growth and GDP). Advocating support for SMEs growth is also important as result from the study showed that increase consumption of locally made materials by SMEs is one way by which SMEs contributes to the growth of the country. It showed that SMEs contributes positively to Nigeria’s national output; SMEs help to reduce incidence of unemployment in Nigeria, as they also help to reduce incidence of unemployment in the country. Finally, result confirmed that performance of commercial banks as well determine performance of the SMEs. In corroborating the former assertion, maintained that adverse economic condition including the threat or existence of unemployment may stimulate people to set up business on their own account. All these implied that support for the SMEs should not be relegated to the background, as they constitute the backbone of Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
